This Russian zookeeper was caught between a rock and a real hard place.

A Siberian tiger pinned the handler who was bringing it food, biting and clawing at her.

The woman was only saved when quick-thinking onlookers shouted and threw stones at the beast until it backed off.

The big cat, named Typhoon, sprang on the unidentified keeper at the Kaliningrad Zoo in Russia Saturday because its cage door had been accidentally left open.

Shocking photos show the tiger gnawing on the young woman as she lies on her back screaming in terror. The attack happened near a fence mere feet from where zoo visitors had been taking photos of the beast.

Besides throwing rocks, some men managed to lift a table and chairs from a nearby café and hurl them over the fence to distract the tiger while the keeper crawled away to safety.

The zookeeper was badly mauled. She was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive.

“The girl’s face was bleeding,” one witness said. “She screamed and tried to fight off the animal.”

The Siberian tiger, the largest cat in the world, was supposed to be contained in another part of its compound when the woman brought in a hunk of meat for dinner. No other zoo employees were present inside the cage at the time.

In a statement, the zoo praised the visitors who saved the employee’s life.

“The animal entered the enclosure when the keeper was there. The tiger attacked the human,” the statement read.

“Visitors with their shouting, stones and other improvisation managed to distract the animal. This allowed the zoo employee to hide in a back room.”

Four women have had new vaginas grown in the laboratory and implanted by doctors in the US.

A tissue sample and a biodegradable scaffold were used to grow vaginas in the right size and shape for each woman as well as being a tissue match.

They all reported normal levels of “desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction” and painless intercourse.

Experts said the study, published in the Lancet, was the latest example of the power of regenerative medicine.

‘I feel fortunate’

In each woman the vagina did not form properly while they were still inside their mother’s womb, a condition known as vaginal aplasia.

Current treatments can involve surgically creating a cavity, which is then lined with skin grafts or parts of the intestine.

Doctors at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina used pioneering technology to build vaginas for the four women who were all in their teenage years at the time.

Scans of the pelvic region were used to design a tube-like 3D-scaffold for each patient.

A small tissue biopsy was taken from the poorly developed vulva and grown to create a large batch of cells in the laboratory.

Muscle cells were attached to the outside of the scaffold and vaginal-lining cells to the inside.

The vaginas were carefully grown in a bioreactor until they were suitable to be surgically implanted into the patients.

One of the women with an implanted vagina, who wished to keep her name anonymous, said: “I believe in the beginning when you find out you feel different.

“I mean while you are living the process, you are seeing the possibilities you have and all the changes you’ll go through.

“Truly I feel very fortunate because I have a normal life, completely normal.”

‘An important thing’

All the women reported normal sexual function.

Vaginal aplasia can lead to other abnormalities in the reproductive organs, but in two of the women the vagina was connected to the uterus.

There have been no pregnancies, but for those women it is theoretically possible.

Dr Anthony Atala, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest, told the BBC News website: “Really for the first time we’ve created a whole organ that was never there to start with, it was a challenge.”

He said a functioning vagina was a “very important thing” for these women’s lives and witnessing the difference it made to them “was very rewarding to see”.

This is the first time the results have been reported. However, the first implants took place eight years ago.

‘Most important questions’

Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland have used similar techniques to reconstruct the noses of patients after skin cancer.

It could replace the need to take cartilage from the ribs or ears in order to rebuild the damage caused by cutting the cancer away.

Prof Martin Birchall, who has worked on lab-grown windpipes, commented: “These authors have not only successfully treated several patients with a difficult clinical problem, but addressed some of the most important questions facing translation of tissue engineering technologies.

The steps between first-in-human experiences such as those reported here and their use in routine clinical care remain many, including larger trials with long-term follow-up, the development of clinical grade processing, scale-out, and commercialisation.”

Rough morning *photos taken by me*

One Porsche owner is having a morning they’d likely wish to forget.

A driver of a Gemballa Mirage GT—an ultra-rare, highly modified version of the already rare Carrera GT—wrecked into a handful of cars in Midtown Manhattan Tuesday morning. The damage isn’t pretty, judging by these pictures shared by Instagram user ronniecnyc.

The owner of the car, Benjamin Chen, was arrested following the series of crashes around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, a New York Police Department spokesperson confirmed to Road & Track. Police said the car was not stolen, but was being operated by Chen when the incident occurred. He’s been charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and reckless driving.

Chen, who goes by BC on Instagram, owns an extensive collection of exotics. According to a CarFax report, the formerly grey Carrera GT has had three owners, the most recent of which bought the car in 2014. That timing jibes with an interview Chen did with DuPont Registry in 2014 about Gemballa’s modifications to his new car. And while his Instagram is private, Chen has 378,000+ followers and frequently posts photos of his cars, like this one of the Mirage GT from last April.

The car struck several vehicles along 11th Avenue on the west side of Manhattan before eventually coming to a stop on 44th street, just north of the Javits Center. The New York International Auto Show is held annually at the convention center, though the space is currently being used as field hospital amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Video shows the driver losing control of the car on 11th Avenue while crossing West 49th Street, crashing into what appears to be a parked Toyota Sienna.

An additional video shows the car speeding away after the collision, and continuing down the avenue. Despite the significant damage done to the front end, the car was able to flee the scene, running at least one red light in the process. Five parked vehicles were struck, police said.

And below, the end of the ordeal when a New York State Police trooper caught up with the crashed Porsche. Chen was “conscious and alert” when officers arrived at the scene, police said.

The post Answered : What Is The Most Dangerous Drug In The World? appeared first on Who Sick.

    ]]>
AsapSCIENCE and In A Nutshell (Kurzgesagt), two of the coolest nerds on YouTube, have collaborated on a new animation that aims to reveal the most dangerous drug in the world. Here’s a clue, it isn’t heroin or cocaine.

First off, there are a few things you need to consider. If we are just talking about lethal substances, the deadliest known drug is botulinum toxin, better known as Botox or the stuff people inject into faces for cosmetic purposes. Just 0.00000007 grams of this is enough to kill an average-sized human – there’s something to think about next time you get worried about a wrinkle.

However, lethality is not necessarily a good measure of danger. As explained in the video, a team of UK scientists carried out an investigation to discover how much harm is caused by 25 different recreational drugs using 16 new parameters. These parameters also considered wider forms of physical, psychological, and social harm, including the risk of dependency, impairment of mental functioning, and its association with criminal activities. This multi-criteria analysis allowed them to gauge the harm to the individual user and the harm to others, something other analyses have not looked at.

At the bottom of the ranks, causing the least harm to both users and others, were magic mushrooms, LSD, and ecstasy. These three recreational drugs had a relatively low rate of harm to the user, while the harm to others was practically non-existent. Although these drugs are not exactly harmless, they’re not innately addictive nor widely associated with crime.

In terms of harm to an individual, heroin is the most dangerous. It’s easy to develop a physical dependency, it has terrible withdrawal symptoms, it directly causes numerous health complications, and it’s associated with all kinds of social problems. Crack cocaine was not too far behind heroin, also posing a high risk to the user and others. After this pair, there was methamphetamine, cocaine, tobacco, then amphetamines.

However, none of these drugs were the most dangerous overall. In regards to overall harm, alcohol takes the top spot by a long shot. Check out the video below to see why this socially acceptable and perfectly legal drug is so very dangerous.

The post These 6 Sleep Positions Tell About Your Personality Also How Affect Your Health appeared first on Who Sick.

    ]]>
Sleeping is a wondrous function of nature that helps to restore the immune system, as well as the nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems of our bodies. When the lights go out, what specific sleep position one chooses has been, according to experts, linked to human health and, indeed, to one’s particular personality type.

Director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, Professor Chris Idzikowski conducted experiments with 1,000 sleeping subjects in order to analyze six of the most common sleeping positions. The study yielded some interesting results. Here is some of what they found:

    1. The “fetal” position

This is the most common sleeping position. One curls up while lying on one’s side. Forty-one percent of the 1,000 subjects in the study preferred sleeping like this.

    Personality type

This posture may reflect a tough exterior and a soft and sensitive heart. Those who sleep like this may take some time to warm up to but prove to be warm and relaxed once they do.

    Health pros & cons

If this is your sleeping posture of choice, it is preferred to sleep on your right side, as sleeping on your left side will put pressure on your vital organs: liver, stomach, lungs, etc.

    2. The “freefall” position

This posture involves lying stomach-down, arms holding the pillow, with the head facing to the side.

    Personality type

The tummy-down pose may indicate an expressive personality. Although such persons may seem brash and full of confidence on the outside, they may actually be vulnerable to slights.

    Health pros & cons

Stomach-down sleeping postures are generally beneficial for the digestive system.

    3. The “log” position

One lies on one’s side with arms at one side.

    Personality type

Those who prefer this position are agreeable though they have a tendency to be overly trusting and gullible, and this may lead them to being taken advantage of.

    Health pros & cons

The log position is excellent for the spine and relieves back pain.

    4. The “yearner”

One lies on one side with both arms extended in front of the body.

    Personality type

Those who sleep in this position are willing to try new things but can also be apprehensive and indecisive. Once they have made a decision, however, they tend to stick with it.

    Health pros & cons

Sleeping on one’s side can help prevent stomach acid reflux and soothe sleep apnea.

    5. The “soldier” position

One lies flat on one’s back with both arms at one side.

    Personality type

People who choose the soldier sleeping pose may be the strong, silent type. They often hold both themselves and others to high standards in life.

    Health pros & cons

According to studies, sleeping on one’s back can lead to snoring and poor sleeping.

    6. The “starfish” position

One lies on one’s back with both arms raised.

    Personality type

If the Starfish position is your preferred sleep position, you may be a good listener and successful with maintaining friendships. Such persons tend to not like being the center of attention.

    Health pros & cons

This position may also lead to snoring and respiration problems.
